“Water is an important ingredient to the sustenance of life, which is why today is a day of celebration as our Chinese friends have assisted us in this crucial development project,” she said.

Mutharika said the borehole will help reduce the distance walked by women and girls in search for water in the community, which will in turn provide more time for the girls to attend school and for the women to focus on economic activities.

“I am grateful for the support the Chinese Government has provided to this country through numerous projects such as the construction of the Parliament Building and the Karonga-Chitipa Road. We are hopeful that this great relationship between the two countries will be maintained for the future prosperity of this country,” she said.

Chinese Ambassador Wang Shiting urged people of the area to take good care of the borehole so that it remains effective and sustainable for everyone.
